| Bikini Bandits | Shorts | The first real watermark for me from ATOM films. Tons of great and not so great work followed from a myriad of film makers old and new, but for me, these gun toting strippers will ever be the cherub blushing face of ATOM Films. |
Obnoxious
fun!
|
| Babette's Feet | Comedy Short | Brilliant piece about a foot fetishist meeting his match by my Documentary Instructor, Harry Killas no less. And yes, Sarah Jane Redmond does have great feet to show off in a sushi joint. Can be seen on ATOM Films. |
Rad!!
|
| The Artist's Circle | Satire Short | Great bit on the fickle nature of art critic crowds. Made me laugh out loud, anyway. Written, Directed and Edited by my Directing Instructor Bruce Marchfelder, earned him a featured spot in the Cannes Film Festival. Can be seen on ATOM Films. |
Slick!
|
| Free Parking | Action Short | Well shot, nice build, and great finale! Love the way Stefanie Stroebele curses in German! Can be seen on ATOM Films. |
Fun!
|
| Butt Naked | Comedy Short | A nice play on childhood bloopers, with ample shots of that naked guy running around the house clutching his winkie like Nature Boy. The editing is playful. |
Worth
seeing once.
|
| Apt 310 | Thriller Short | Awesome circular yarn with stunning art direction! VFS Class 80 AVID Project (w/ help from 78-81). |
Excellent!
|
| White Picket | Thriller Short | Nice turnabout punchline, solid story, great out take after the credits! VFS Class 78. |
Groovy!
|
| The Ink | Thriller Short | Simply luscious. Bloody, delightful flashbacks, and wonderful finish! VFS Class 80 AVID Project (w/ help from 78-81). |
Ace!!!
|
| Bricklayer | Comedy Short | Laughed my ass off for all the right reasons! One of the funniest short films I've seen in a long, long time. Also some of the best focus pulling I've ever seen for a student film, especially the one and a half minute shot that has, count 'em, ELEVEN pulls. Good gravy, y'all! Great website for it as well! VFS Class 78. |
Brilliant!!
|
| The Grind | Drama Short | Excellent editing and dolly work, and love the cameos at the poker table. Also notable: the close ups of the hands shuffling the chips, very slick. Reminded me a lot of the tense moments of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. VFS Class 78. |
Great!!
|
| Starlight Starbright | Drama Short | Really thoughtful and intimate exchange between mother and daughter that pits poetic musing against bitter stark reality. Some really spectacular lighting and use of reflections and silhouettes! VFS Class 78. |
Sweet!
|
| Sherwood's Forest | Documentary Short | Ready for prime time, or at least the Biography Channel. Slick editing, effects, and visual story telling. VFS Class 78. |
Excellent!
|
| The 51st State | Mockumentary Short | Ready for the Daily Show, this take on perceptions of Americans from the average smattering of Canadians on the street mixed with scholars against the theory that BC is ready to be the 51st State cracked me up to no end. Love the narrator character! Great end credit artwork!! VFS Class 78. |
Delightfully
evil!
|
| The Day | Sci-Fi Drama Short | Great cinematography, lighting and location. Solid actors. Some concerns about the "fear the bomb" Outer Limits style short script, though, kind of heavy handed. VFS Class 81. |
Dry.
|
| Dealing | Drama Short | Great camera, edit, locations. The ending really sold well, but the first half felt stiff and the office coworker simply contrived. Tag line is "I was happy when it died." Kind of says it all. VFS Class 81. |
Downbeat
but with a great finish.
|
| Poet Vandals | Drama Short | Solid script and well delivered, though occasionally hampered by soft focus and awkward hand held shots, like in the art store, the same art store that my most recent sketchbook is from, actually. VFS Class 81. |
Practical.
|
| Yummy | Comedy Short | A really clever story that is murdered by the timing, either from the shot script, or the editing, I can't say. The brilliance of the story peeks out occasionally, an odd non sequitur here, a neat punchline registering there. The prat fall simply hurts, and the art direction is somewhat haphazard. Still, respect to the tale of the worms for dinner! VFS Class 81. |
They
say God lives in the Details, so squint, there's good stuff in there.
|
| Clear Cut | Documentary Short | Preachy, and I've heard the reason subsequent classes are banned from using stock footage for our docs. The helicopter aerial shots gave it away. The 3D Weather Channel forestry graphics were interesting. The many shots of the beetles at knife point though, stock of not, save the show from being truly painful. VFS Class 81. |
Almost
painful.
|
| Gorillas In Our Midst | Documentary Short | All about the gig of a man and his gorilla suit that can sing. I laughed out loud for all the right reasons, especially over the bits with his girlfriend in the suit, which were vaguely disturbing while almost kinky, and the great side profile shot with the furry protruding erectile anomaly. VFS Class 81. |
Fun!!
|
| Hired for Sound | Documentary Short | Well crafted, though felt like a corporate vid, albeit a well made one, promoting the acoustical craftsmanship of the profiled professional. The recurrent acoustic guitarist is cool, although the one shot where he magically dissolves in in front of the church is more amusing to me than it should be, and suddenly I thought of Puff the Magic Dragon and smiled a marmalade smile. VFS Class 81. |
Dry.
|
| Out of the Shell | Documentary Short | To quote the experts: " a peek into the Montessori classroom reveals a thriving environment where children develop an internal sense of purpose and learn how to shape themselves into intelligent, confident and engaging human beings." Exactly. Very, very well made, discovered, depicted and illuminated. A model to refer to for all students to come. Hence it won the big award at the Class 81 Graduation. Does remind me of that one Class 78 did about the theater kids, though. Interesting. New theory to test: kids being trained not to be wankers equals awards and critical acclaim for attending documentary film makers. Hmmm. VFS Class 81. |
Excellent!
